Marine Harvest’s Orca Boat Tour Day a Huge Success! Aug 2008

Marine Harvest’s live fish hauling vessels were the main attraction during the 3rd annual Boat Rodeo held in Campbell River on August 24th, 2008.  The Orca Chief and Orca Warrior were both “Open for Tours” during the Rodeo which also featured bath tub boat races, model boat display, Canadian Coast Guard helicopter mock rescue and many more fun filled events.  Marine Harvest staff welcomed over 500 visitors who were treated to a thorough tour of crew quarters, galley, captain’s deck, engine rooms and fish holds.  Visitors were a mixture of locals and out-of-towners who were very interested to learn about the business of salmon farming and how these incredible live haul vessels worked.
The Orca Chief is the largest vessel in Marine Harvest Canada’s fleet.  It’s length is 114 feet and has the ability to move up to 75 tonnes of live fish in a 500 cubic metre hold.  It also performs fish size grading duties at Marine Harvest’s fish farms.  It was built in Norway in 1998.
The annual Campbell River Boat Rodeo is organized by the Maritime Heritage Society.
