Comox Rotary Tours Thurlow Salmon Farm Site

Thanks in part, to a fortunate break in the weather, the Comox Rotary Club toured Marine Harvest’s Thurlow salmon farm site on Saturday, March 28th, 2009. The site is located close to Campbell River in Nodales Channel. Ian Roberts, Marine Harvest’s Communications Manager, had presented to the group at a weekly meeting earlier in the year and invited members to learn more about the business of salmon farming. Twenty-two Rotarians took him up on the offer and joined Ian and Paula Galloway from the BC Salmon Farmers Association for a day’s adventure.

During the tour, the members learned about many parts of the salmon farming cycle, including the diet requirements of salmon, the production cycle, fish health and environmental monitoring at the farm site. Dennis Morrison (Farm Technician) also removed several fish from the water to demonstrate the effective sea lice management program at Marine Harvest salmon farms. All salmon inspected were free of sea lice.
